Changing up the Bedroom

Pictured below is what my bedroom has looked like forever.  I had the same set-up in my last home and just imported it here...the same Pottery Barn quilt on my bed, with the same red lanterns, flanking my same scrolly iron mirror.  I still like it, but after awhile a girl needs a change!
I've also had too much red in my life and feel the need for something lighter and fresher throughout the house.  This scrolly mirror is nice but wasn't really popping against the brick.

I decided I wanted to give the mirror an appearance of white-washed iron.  I have a bit of an obsession with iron gates and wanted the frame to look a bit like a salvaged gate.  I took a small sponge brush dipped in white paint and just outlined the scrolls. It was so easy to do, cost me nothing, and made a big difference.
Next, I focused on updating my lanterns.
The shades are flexible plastic, covered in fabric.  I sort of liked the industrial-cage-look without the shade, but again, it didn't look good up against my brick.
I debated covering the shades with different fabric, or paper, but decided I would just paint the existing shades white.  This proved challenging.  Fabric is hard to paint when you're not using the right paint!  I primed them with cheap Big Lots spray paint primer, and then sprayed them with Rustoleum Heirloom White.  The fabric kept sucking up all the paint, so it took several coats.  I have zero patience when it comes to waiting for things to dry, so I always use fans and hair dryers in my projects.  Just be sure to set your hair dryer to a cool setting.
Here they are below looking good and almost dry.  Oh, and just ignore that huge thing of sisal rope. I was going to incorporate it, but liked it better without.  However be sure to notice that fantastic price!  Big Lots baby.  I keep telling you all.  :).
Once my lanterns had their new dresses on, they were quite showy for the camera.  Pretty eh?
Then it was just a matter of accessorizing!  I repurposed some topiaries from downstairs to this spot...
....grabbed a plate that I had in the cupboard,
...and snatched a nest with my decorative paper balls .
Turning the mirror horizontal instead of vertical seems like such a no-brainer but for some reason it never occurred to me until today.  Here's another tip, see how my topiaries are not directly beneath the lanterns?  Having symmetry without boxiness adds more interest.
So, let's see it again....

What do you think so far?

New Addition to the Family

I am so excited!  And no, I am not pregnant, but I do believe that I have a certain glow about me right now.

Okay, so that's not me.  That is Gwyneth Paltrow. (Love her!)  But if my inner excitement could match my outer appearance, then I would look exactly like Gwyneth right now.  What could make me so radiant and happy you ask?  Well, if you have been reading my blog since August, then God bless you because that is a lot of me to deal with you know that I have wanted one of these babies below for-like-evah!

I asked for this camera here and here, and I whined about it too many times to link, so let's just put all my collective camera bee-atching here .

Last week, I was on Twitter. Oh yeah.  I'm cool like dat.  I can tweet with the best of 'em, so feel free to follow me.  And Kasey from Lola B's tweeted that she was selling her Canon Rebel XT, with Lens mind you, for an insanely reasonable price.  I dare not tell you what said insanely reasonable price was because all of you will hate me.  And although I am actually quite accustomed to people hating me, I'm just not up for the drama right now.  Where were we?  Oh yes, Kasey tweeted, and I think instead of Gwyneth....at that moment I was looking something like this...

Kasey has a bazillion followers, so I knew the chances of me being the one were slim.  But at that moment the trumpets sounded, the heavens parted, and...

I
 was
chosen.

Aaa♪aaaaaa♩aaaaah♬hhhhhhh....

Cue glowyness.

I haven't received the camera yet, but I am thrilled that you will no longer have to endure crappy, dark, yellowy photos.  It comes pre-blessed with Kasey's amazing photography abilities, so I have no doubt that the camera will do all the work for me and continue to make her Momma proud.

Oh, and by the way, if you don't believe me, go visit Lola B's for yourself.  Her pictures are all like something out of a dreamy magazine, and the girl can make lampshades out of knee highs.  Knee highs!?

I know that all you can think of right now is the tacky leg lamp from "A Christmas Story", but trust me, these lamp shades are chic and adorable and look nothing like a leg.  Go check them out.

Uh, Beth, congrats on the camera and all, but I thought this was a decorating blog???

Don't worry friends.  I'm busy painting and spray painting, so I should have something pretty and transformed to show you soon!  In the meantime, I invite you to bask in my glow.  Can you bask in someone else's glow?  Does it work that way?  Ah well, you're invited to anyway.

I Dare You: Get Your Face On Party 2/17!

Calling all bloggers, calling all bloggers: This is a call to be bold and courageous!

Awhile back I did a post called Decorating My Face , and I showed you what I looked like pre and post makeup.  It was one of the most fun posts I have done in the two years I have been blogging.  I asked you to share some of your own makeup tips and you delivered!  However, the world of women needs you to be brave enough to show us all how it is done.

  • I invite you to do a post showing us your bare face and the steps you take to enhance your beauty.
  • Take pictures of the process, highlighting your makeup tips, and show us your before and after mug shots.
  • Link your post back here on Wednesday, February 17th for all to enjoy.
  • **Edited to add: If you don't wear makeup, you can still join the party with some other before and after beauty post. Decorate your hands, your feet, your hair, etc. (although I'm not sure what that etc. would be---surprise us.)**
Come on.  You CAN do this!  Who is with me?

Grab a button on the sidebar and spread the dare.

Mantel Party #5 Review

This week's Mantel Party held some fantastic Valentine's inspiration.  Here is just a sampling:

We also had some incredible "befores" and "afters":

And last but not least, in honor of what I'm playfully calling:

We had some snow inspiration that I don't mind looking at one bit! Gorgeous!

Thanks to everyone who linked up this week!  Come back next Friday and show off your decorated surface.  Remember, you don't need a mantel-mantle to link up.  Any flat surface with objects on it will do!

Some of you have asked for a "featured" button.  If your mantel was ever featured on my site, feel free to grab the pic and post it proudly on your sidebar.

Snowdom '10

I will admit it.  I was jealous.  Okay, so I am still jealous.

While most of my favorite bloggers were laughing, bonding, two stepping, and Harry Connick Jr.'ing here:
I was experiencing my bliss snow here:

And let me tell you, the Snowdom '10 conference was so NOT my bliss.  Like many of you NE peeps, we received enough snow for the entire winter in a period of twelve hours.

You might remember that I took this picture of my bathroom shells for you on Friday afternoon...
...and here is what it looked like Saturday morning!

But at least the kids can get out in the snow and have some fun, right?

Are we having fun yet?

Ugh.  How much longer until spring?  Go away Snowdom '10.  Go. A.Way.

My Master Bathroom

Not long ago, I gave you a tour of my boys' bathroom.  Chris from Just a Girl told me to go clean another room so you all could see it.  Yes ma'am.  And in case you think I'm kidding, and you are under some delusion that my bathroom always looks like this, allow me to quote my five year old, "Mommy, I have NEVER seen this room look like this before! Is it going to stay like this forever?  It's like a whole new room."  Okay, Asher that's enough honey no go run along and play.  In my defense, all I did was remove the pile of clothes that had accumulated in front of the tub and clean the inch of filth that had accumulated everywhere.  Asher tends to be a bit dramatic.  Don't know where the kid gets it from! *Wink, wink.*
When we bought this house it was nothing but a shell.  It had been completely gutted which meant I was able to design it from top to bottom.  I found this wood panel thingy at Home Goods before our house even had a floor plan designed.  I had NO idea where I was going to use it, but I knew I loved it.  I wanted my bathroom to have an old-world garden feel to it.  This wood thingy complemented the mirrors I chose and added interest to an otherwise snore of a wall.  I love it here.  Tip:  If you love something and the price is right, buy it.  You'll figure out a place for it.
If you know me, you know I adore the beach.  All the shells you see here are ones I collected (minus the sea star.)  Tip:  Surround your bath with things that bring you peace and tranquility.  For some it's plants. For me it is shells!
This message in a bottle contains sweet nothings written by my hubby and used to contain my engagement ring at the bottom.  He's such a romantic.  This was the bottle he used to propose to me.
Tip:  Use lots of candles in your bathroom to add instant romantic ambiance.

Here is a pic of the privy.  There is probably too much going on here.  The sticks should go, but I like them so they stay.  Tip: If you want to always have a roll on hand and have said rolls looking cute, place them abundantly in a wire basket.
This is my "Lettered Cottage Lantern".  Yes, Layla has a lantern named after her.  I think about her and her chic self whenever I'm in the loo.  I'm sure she feels honored.
More shells and apothecary jars in the window.  I told you I loved shells!
My vanities are my favorite part about my bathroom.  They were on sale at Lowes two years ago, and I snatched them up.  I adore decorative scrolly things.  Look at the mirrors, the chandeliers, the candle holders on the wall, the wood thingy above the tub, and the vanities.  All of them are ornate.  I can't help it. It is what I am attracted to.
I had originally settled on a long double sink cabinet when plumbing was going in. When I changed my mind, the plumbers weren't able to reposition the sinks without a lot of drama.  No worries.  I just decided I would find something to fill the awkward expanse between the sinks.
This cabinet was the perfect solution.  It was a cheap find from Target.  Tip:  Baskets are a fantastic way to hide all of your ugliness and make things appear tidy.  Rolling your towels instead of folding them adds interest and takes up less space.

Tip:  Fill cute glass jars with items you use every day.  These jars came from Ikea.

Tip: If you don't want to see how much you weigh, place a large conch shell over the numbers on your scale.  Hey, it is totally working for me!

I hope you enjoyed the tour of my master bath!

Answers to Questions and Mantel Party #5

If you came to link up to the mantel party, scroll down to the bottom and show off what you have going on this week.  If you want some answers to all those great questions you asked me a few days ago, read on...

My Marriage
Anonymous said…Can you tell us if the issue from your very first blog post has been resolved. I've been praying for you and your family. ...just want to know if you have peace with what it is you blogged about.
So many of you have written me privately to let me know that you have been praying for me, my family, my dad’s cancer, and my financial situation.  Thank you!  Anonymous, I have been blogging for just over two years now.  My very first post ever written was about the trials of living in the city.  I’m guessing that maybe you are instead referring to my first post written at the end of 2009?  Either way, I am at peace with my life, and I’ll get into what’s going on with me further down the page J.  Thank you, thank you for your prayers.

You hinted in one of your posts about your marriage that you and your husband almost divorced. I was wondering if you felt comfortable telling more about what happened. I'm having major problems in my marriage and I found what you shared encouraging.
I am so sorry to hear that you're at a place where divorce seems like the only escape from the pain.  Marriage is such hard, hard work.  People think that if it’s a "good marriage," it should be easy.  I disagree.  Anyone who is married long enough is bound to hit some major bumps that threaten to derail you off course.  It’s not easy.  Matt and I have had more than our share of bumps….more like brick walls…that have threatened to destroy our life together.  I am not able to go into great detail on the blog as to what happened, but I invite anyone struggling to email me and we’ll chat.  You don’t have to suffer in silence without support.
Cancun for 10th (X) Anniversary, 3/2009
This is a follow-up question to your last post of the 2009. What kind of work does your hubby do? Is he still employed? How are YOU doing? Just wondering...I hope all is well. Lisa
Thanks Lisa J.  Matt’s job is confusing.  He works at a college as the Director of National and International Ministries and he teaches a few courses.  He is in charge of coordinating all of the service projects and missions work that the students do.  The college only pays 1/3 of his salary and Matt is required to raise the rest.  In this economy, that is just NOT going well.  He was told officially this week that his position will be dissolved after this school year.  Matt will be unemployed  in May.
How am I?  Freaking out and in denial.  However, I have seen God provide for my family in amazing and miraculous ways.  (How many of you have had envelopes of money from two different people on two different days slipped under your door with notes saying, “God laid this on my heart to give to you?”)
A practical question that no one asked, but you may be wondering, How can I afford to decorate if we’re so broke?  Good question.  In some ways I probably can’t and shouldn’t be.  In others, it is what keeps me going, filled with hope, and passion.  I try to sell a ton of things on Craigslist and use that money to fund my passion.

What is your idea of the perfect date night with your husband?

XOXO
Jen
At this point, any time we don’t have the kiddos with us is pure bliss!  Matt and I have a ton of fun together and are very playful.  We have a blast just hanging out in a coffee shop analyzing life.  If /when we have some money to play with, I love the dates which involve something outdoorsy followed by something lush and pampering.  I blogged about one of my all-time favorite dates with Matt here if you want to get a glimpse of our love story.

My Family
I have a question about your boys :) I love their names and the fact that they aren't very common. So my question is: How did you and your husband decide on their names? Are they family names or just ones you like?

My husband and I are expecting our second child in July and are completely stuck as far as names go. It is such a big decision!
Congrats Chelsy! Isn’t choosing names so hard!  I chose both my guys names based on the following criteria: Biblical, good meaning, unique.  (Matt just went along with whatever I wanted J.)  Asher is Hebrew for happy which is so perfect for him! Zephan is short for the book Zephaniah and means “one who is treasured by God”.  My parents were a bit mortified by both names, but I didn’t care.  Naming a child is a very personal matter.  Everyone will have an opinion on the subject. However, it is the one decision you have complete control over!  And in pregnancy, as in life, you can’t say that about very many things.  All the best to you as you choose a name for your little blessing.

What is the one thing in your life that you would love to do but you know you will never accomplish?
I would love to have a little girl.  It is not going to happen for me and sometimes that makes me very sad.  I think I would have made a great mom to girls.  However, I believe the Lord hand-picks the children he gives you. I just have to trust that in His wisdom He knew boys were better for us.

Kathy from the Creative Home Expressions Post Examiner here, Beth. : ) Have you ever thought of moving to Virginia, near or with your parents?
Many, many times.  The cost of living is much more expensive in Virginia and the job market competitive.  We honestly don’t see any way right now that we are able to afford to move without significantly changing our standard of living.  As Matt looks for jobs, we’re keeping our eyes peeled for something closer to “home”.
1. How many siblings do you have of each gender and where do fall in the birth order?

2. Who was the artistic one in your family as you were coming up...aside from you?

3. What is your favorite creative past time?
1. I have two amazing sisters.  Kim is 39, I am 35, and Christianne is 30.
2. All of us share similar giftings, but I am the LEAST artistic out of the three.  Kim is the true artist.  She can do anything, and do it well.  Here is a pic below of some of her recent creations.

My little sister, Christianne, is a talented blogger who I've mentioned several times before on my blog.  You can check out her blog here .
3.  Blogging is my favorite creative past time.  I seriously would put one of those, “I’d rather be blogging” stickers on my car.  Okay, no I wouldn’t because they’re tacky.  But if they weren’t…I’d be all about it!

I don't have my own blog but am thinking about starting one. I recently discovered yours and love it! My question is, if you don't mind sharing, how much money do you earn by blogging? Do you charge sponsors or advertisers a monthly rate that you set? Do you only earn money if someone clicks on a link? I don't understand how that part of blogging works. Thanks!
Every blogger charges their sponsors something different.  I don't make enough to brag about :).  If anyone is interested in advertising on my blog, I am open to discussing prices.
I want to know:
1. What is your most favorite makeover you've done in/around your home?
2. Did you have a project that didn't work out the way you planned?
1.  Well, my most favorite project "around" my home is the design and vision I implemented next door. I was paid to design everything for our neighbor's home and I love it.  You can view it here .
2. I rarely if ever have a real plan in mind when I tackle a project.  Almost all of my projects sort of unfold as I'm doing them and almost all of them involve several four letter words muttered under my breath :).
I struggle with finding time to blog and work on projects and mother and clean and do laundry, etc. How do you find time or rather, make time for these creative endeavors while still doing everything else?
The short answer is....I don't.  Something is almost always being neglected and typically it's the house.  So many times when I'm taking beautiful pics of an area of my house you would laugh to see the disgrace happening in the rest.  To answer your question in a more helpful way, I try to be creative in the evenings. I don't watch a ton of tv and use my spare time to craft, decorate, and blog.  (Insomnia proves helpful at times too. :)
Thanks for all the questions.  That was fun :).
Now let's see those mantels!

Sideboard Makeover

I have been very slowly making over my dining room.  Here is a picture below of my sideboard up against the window.  I moved it awhile ago and have been waiting to hang this great mirror I found at Goodwill for $20.  Hanging things securely into brick is a nightmare.

The mirror was a great find for the price but I wasn't happy with the oak color.  Do you see that pennant banner reflected in the mirror?  That was back before Halloween.  This project took way longer than it should have and this is why...
I rubbed some liquid sander on the mirror and used PolyShades Minwax.  Big mistake.  After three coats it looked like this.  Not bad, but not nearly as rich and dark as I wanted.  Ugh.  I had to start all over again.  I didn't want to start all over again, pout, pout, cross arms, stamp foot.  So instead I just stuck it in a corner and left it there until I felt like dealing with it again.
This time I used Mixwax Dark Walnut Stain.  It takes days to dry, but it is worth the wait.  This was much more of what I was going for!
Looks pretty good!
The chunky baskets, lanterns, topiary, and pineapple finial thingy are all from the Christmas Tree Shop and were all cheap, cheap, cheap!  I told you all that store is awesome.  If you have one near you, it is worth a trip.  And, Stephanie, if you are reading this leave a comment!  It was so great to meet you in the store!

I gave the pineapple a little makeover.
Tip: If you want something to instantly look 78% cuter, stick it on a candlestick.

I ripped the ugly raffia bow off of this cutie below and she made for the perfect $2 topiary.
And these lanterns below are my favorite find.  I have been looking forever for something like these and Target wanted $20 for one lantern.  Uh....no.  So when I saw these babies for $7 I squealed.  The hooks are cast iron from Big Lots ($3) and were originally gold.  I just spray painted them black.
I have several more things I would like to do in this room, but in order to do that I need to sell off more baby items on Craigslist!
What do you think so far?

Deals on Pictures and Ask Me Anything

I was hoping to post about a little project I've been working on in my dining room today, but it requires drilling into my brick which is proving to be a total nightmare.  I've broken four masonry bits already. AAaaaaarrrrrrggh!  So, you will just have to wait for that one.  In the meantime, I'll share with you some online picture printing deals.
A woman from my mom's group at church shared this site which offers amazing deals on pictures.  New members receive 1200 free prints.  Simply register at artscow.com then click on "My Account".  Scroll down on the right side to "Credit & Discount".  Here you will see all the free prints you qualify for.  You do need to pay for shipping, but it is reasonable.

Canvaspeople.com offers every household a free 8x10 canvas.  I just had the picture below of me and my dad placed on canvas, and I love it.  It cost me around $5 in shipping and handling. ***Edited to add:  Oops. It cost me $14.95 NOT $4.95 as I had previously thought. So sorry for the misinformation.***

Okay, completely switching gears here.  I get a lot of personal emails from you all asking me questions ranging from the paint color in various rooms, to my marriage, to how to handle blog ettiquette issues, to scrapblog questions, to whether or not I bleach my hair, to what I believe about God.  I LOVE that you feel free to ask me anything!  So, I thought I would open the comment forum up to questions and I'll do a post answering your questions.  NOTHING is off limits.  Ask away.  Seriously.  Ask me.  I double dog dare you to.

In search of non-mom, yet mom-friendly jeans...

Last year at this time I weighed 119lbs.  It was a good and very brief time in my life.  Today, I weigh 136 lbs give or take a pound. Uh...oops?  Seriously Beth, are you surprised when every other blog post is Death by Doublelicious Chocolate this, and Cream Cheese Chicken that?  No.  I'm not at all surprised, just annoyed.  Wouldn't it be nice if we could just eat what we want, when we want, not work out, and stay skinny? Can I get an Amen???
Needless to say I was in need of some new jeans.  My old ones still "fit" but felt a bit like a boa constrictor torture chamber.  Also, each time I bent down my husband would affectionately refer to me as "Plumbercrack Queen".  Yikes!  It was time to concede that I was no longer a size 6.

I had read on three different blogs about these Slender Secret Lee Jeans.  I'll be honest. I felt a bit snobby towards the brand, which is ridiculous considering I wear off-brands all the time!  However the last time I wore something by Lee it was a jean jacket with puffy sleeves and my jeans had fluorescent pin-stripes running down them.  I still associate Lee with the early 80's.  So sorry Lee, but you haven't done much to improve your image.  Also, this picture below wasn't drawing me in.  Those look a bit like mom-jeans to me.   However, I've learned that fellow bloggers don't lie, so if others loved them I decided they were at least worth a try.
I tried them on and was instantly sold.  I can't say that they slenderize you, but they are incredibly comfortable.  The stretch in them is perfect, the cut, pretty impressive, and the rise, non-obscene.  No more Plumbercrack Queen for me!  And yes, you are all welcome for that one.
Yes Beth, but do they make your butt look big?  Ugh.  I knew you were going to ask me this!  Now remember that I am showing you myself 17lbs overweight so be kind.  I have a very...shall we say...ample booty even on a 119lb day.  I always have and always will.  So, this question is a difficult one to answer.
It's also really, really hard to take a picture of your backside!

I don't know.  You tell me.  Does it look ginormous?  Just kidding.  Please keep that opinion to yourself.
I recommend these jeans for all women who want a comfortable, stylish jean and aren't a size zero.  The ones I am wearing are a size 8 and I bought them at Kohls, on sale for around $25.  They come in petite and plus sizes as well, so check them out.  You may just be thrilled that you did!

And by the way, I'm not getting paid by Lee to endorse their jeans, but I will gladly take any and all money they would like to pass my way!  *Hint Hint* Lee.  Happy Bootylicious Jean Shopping to you!  Let me know if they work for you.
